RESOURCES for INFORMATION ABOUT CURRENT INDIGENOUS FAMILY ISSUES IN CANADA: In January we are highlighting “Jordan’s Principle”.

T
he First Nations Child and Family Caring Society (FNCS) was formed in 1998 and exists to provide reconciliation-based public education, policy guidance, research, advocacy, and support to promote the safety and wellbeing of First Nations children, young people, families, communities and Nations.

Jordan's Principle is a legal principle designed to address gaps in government-funded services and discrimination that can result in delay, disruption or denial of services to First Nations children. FNCS currently has a case against the government for non-compliance, given the backlog of applications for redress/resolution under Jordan’s principle. Currently there more than 130,000 children waiting for needed services, with over 120,000 considered “urgent”.
